TOTUS FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TOTUS?

TOTUS is a modular card game universe where themed decks explore knowledge, history, imagination, and creativity. Each deck stands on its own, yet all decks can be combined to create endless ways to play.

Do I need more than one deck to play?

No.
Each TOTUS deck is fully playable on its own. Combining decks is optional and simply adds variety and new strategic possibilities.

Can I mix decks with different themes?

Yes — and that’s one of the joys of TOTUS.

A scientist can face a mythical creature.
A sailing ship can cross paths with a gangster’s scheme.

All decks share the same core structure, so mixing themes never requires learning new rules.

Is TOTUS easy to learn?

Yes. TOTUS is designed to be approachable for new players while offering depth for experienced ones.

Most players can begin playing after a short introduction and continue discovering new strategies as they go.

What are the main types of cards?

Each deck follows the same universal structure:

  • People / Creatures — Characters, beings, and forces that drive the game

  • Ideas — Concepts and discoveries that shape strategy

  • Tools — Objects and resources that empower play

  • Special Cards — Rare effects that can change the flow of the game

Because this structure is consistent, players can move between decks easily.

What is Beginner Gameplay?

Beginner Gameplay is the recommended way to learn TOTUS.
It uses the core rules without additional resources, allowing players to focus on understanding cards, strategy, and flow.

What is Advanced Gameplay?

Advanced Gameplay introduces Energy (⚡) — a resource that adds deeper strategy and decision-making.

Advanced Gameplay:

  • Uses the same cards and decks

  • Does not change core rules

  • Adds optional strategic depth

Players can move into Advanced Gameplay whenever they feel ready.

Do I need to play Advanced Gameplay?

Not at all.
TOTUS is fully enjoyable using Beginner Gameplay alone.

Advanced Gameplay is optional and intended for players who enjoy deeper planning and tighter strategic choices.

Can TOTUS be played casually or competitively?

Both.

TOTUS supports:

  • Casual, story-driven play

  • Strategic and competitive play

  • Creative experimentation with mixed decks

Players decide how serious or relaxed each game becomes.

Is TOTUS appropriate for all ages?

TOTUS is designed for a wide range of players. Younger players may enjoy simpler strategies and themes, while older players often enjoy deeper combinations and Advanced Gameplay.

Is TOTUS still growing?

Yes. TOTUS is a living universe.

New decks, themes, and ideas can be added over time — all designed to work within the same universal structure.

How many players can play TOTUS?

TOTUS is designed for 2 or more players.

Games scale naturally with more players, especially when combining multiple decks. Players are encouraged to experiment and find the group size that best fits their play style.

How long does a game of TOTUS take?

Most games last between 20–45 minutes, depending on:

  • Number of players

  • Deck combinations used

  • Whether Beginner or Advanced Gameplay is chosen

Shorter or longer games can easily be adjusted by group preference.

What do I need to start playing?

To begin playing TOTUS, you need:

  • At least one TOTUS deck

  • A flat surface

  • A sense of curiosity 😊

No additional accessories are required. Energy tokens are only needed if playing Advanced Gameplay and can be represented using any small counters.

Can I make up house rules?

Absolutely.
TOTUS encourages creativity, experimentation, and adapting the game to fit your group. If a house rule makes the game more fun, you’re playing TOTUS the right way.
